9-year-old child drowns in river at Grand Rapids park

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ)— A child rescued from the river in Grand Rapids has died.

In a press release; Grand Rapids Police said they responded “within minutes” to a river rescue, along with the Fire Department, on Saturday (7/20) around 5 p.m. at Riverside Park, in the area of Monroe Avenue and I-96.

A 9-year-old child had gone missing and was believed to be in the river, police said.

“After several minutes, the child was located in the water and brought to shore,” the press release read.

First responders administered CPR before transferring care to Life EMS. The child was rushed to the local hospital, and later pronounced deceased.
