DETROIT (WWJ) Much of the listening area is under a Heat Advisory as children head back to school.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the advisory for Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw, Monroe, Lenawee and Livingston counties from noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2.
Detroit Public Schools say they will release students three hours early for the second day in a row. Wyandotte Public Schools are also holding a half day.
Heat index values (or feels-like temperatures) are expected to hit 102 degrees, according to the NWS.
AccuWeather forecasts actual temperatures will reach 93 degrees. In addition to the heat, forecasters say a thunderstorm may be in store for the afternoon.
Health experts say to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check up on family, friends and neighbors.
If you do have to go outside, avoid strenuous activity, take extra precautions and wear "lightweight and loose clothing."
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness, fatigue, weak and rapid pulse, low blood pressure when standing, muscle cramps, nausea and headache.
If you experience signs of heat exhaustion, you're urged to stop what you're doing, move to a cool and air-conditioned place (if possible) and drink lots of water and/or sports drinks.
The Mayo Clinic says heat stroke, however, is a medical emergency.
Symptoms of that include a high core body temperature (of over 104 degrees Fahrenheit), confusion, agitation or other behavioral changes, nausea and vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart and a throbbing headache.
If you experience symptoms of heat stroke, doctors say you should call 911 right away.
