ALBION (WWJ) – A 35-year-old mother from Albion is in police custody after allegedly stabbing her 2-year-old daughter in the chest and throat and then attempting to drown her in the bathtub.

Police in Albion – about 20 miles west of Jackson – got a 911 call around 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the woman’s 15-year-old daughter, with children screaming and asking for help at their home on Bluestem Court.

When officers showed up they heard commotion from behind a locked door in the home. An officer kicked the door open and found a 35-year-old woman holding a two-year-old under the water in the bathtub, Albion Department of Public Safety officials said.

The officer quickly grabbed the toddler from the woman, took her into the living room and began CPR. After giving a few quick breaths, the child coughed up water and began breathing on her own, officials said.

The woman, a mother of four children in the house, was arrested.

Authorities say the 2-year-old had two stab wounds to the chest and throat, and a four-year-old boy had cuts. Officials believe the children also may have ingested some cleaning fluid. A 15-year-old girl and an 8-year-old did not appear to be injured.

The mother was taken into custody and taken to the hospital as she may have also ingested cleaning fluid.

The 2-year-old and the 4-year-old were taken to the hospital in Jackson and later flown to a hospital in Ann Arbor. They were last known to be in stable condition.

ADPS Chief Scott Kipp applauded the quick actions of both ADPS Lt. Phipps and Deputy Winder of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department whose “quick response and decisive actions helped to save the life” of the toddler.
