SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A Taylor man is hospitalized with serious injuries early Friday morning after he had to be extracted from a mangled vehicle that had veered off the road and crashed into a pole in Southfield.
According to the Southfield Police Department, officers responded to the are of Northwestern Highway and 12 Mile Road around 1:45 a.m. on June 30 after receiving a report of a single-vehicle crash.
When police arrived on scene, they discovered a man, identified as a 27-year-old Taylor resident, trapped inside a wrecked vehicle.
Crews with Southfield Fire and Rescue also responded and had to use the Jaws of Life to pull the man out to safety.
"I can tell you that this is a very severe accident here," Langton reported from the scene around 5 a.m. on Friday. "Police tell me that a younger male was the lone occupant in a Ccrown Victoria car that apparently lost control and then hit a light pole on the right side of Northwestern Highway."
The driver was rushed to a local hospital where he remains hospitalized in critical, but stable condition.
Officers told Langton that they believed alcohol was a factor in the crash. No one else was injured.
Northwestern Highway was closed for several hours as police continued their investigation. The roadway reopened just after 5 a.m., but commuters could still see a police presence on the right side and a couple of lanes were blocked while the wrecked car was being towed, Langton said.
Additional details were not released by police. Updates to the case are expected to be made public when it becomes available.
