Explosives scare leads to backups into Canada on Ambassador Bridge

(WWJ) An explosives scare that shut down U.S. traffic on the Ambassador Bridge has led to traffic trouble in Detroit.

One person was arrested, and Windsor Police remain on the scene investigating, following the incident on the Canadian side of the bridge on Monday.

Late Monday morning, police evacuated an area of downtown Windsor, Ontario near the bridge after they said "possible explosives" were found at Canadian customs.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) alerted WPS after the suspicious cargo was located inside a vehicle in the secondary inspection area.

No threat was made, officials said.

The driver of the vehicle involved was detained and is in custody of CBSA, pending further investigation. No other people are believed to be involved, officials said.

The Windsor Police Explosive Disposal Unit called in to assist.

At of 4 p.m., the bridge remained closed to U.S. traffic, with traffic being rerouted to alternate ports of entry: the Windsor Detroit Tunnel and the Blue Water Bridge. Shortly before 5 p.m., the bridge reopened.

Semi truck traffic, however, remained backed up significantly in Detroit, approaching the Ambassador Bridge. Truck traffic was also very heavy along eastbound I-96 and both directions on I-75 in Southwest Detroit.

Michigan State Police are urging people to avoid the area if possible, until the situation clear... which may not be until sometime Tuesday. To get around it, drivers can take I-94 and/or M-10.

Kris Grogan with U.S .Customs and Border Protection said, meanwhile, there were no problems on the bridge coming into the U.S.

"The main thing is...you know, travel and trade is still coming into the United States, as you can see up on the bridge here," he told WWJ's Jon Hewett. "And operations for CPB remain normal here."

The FBI told WWJ was keeping in touch with Canadian law enforcement partners, and would be available to help if needed.

No injuries were reported.
