DETROIT (WWJ) — A suspect has died after allegedly shooting his nephew to death, leading to an exchange of gunfire with Detroit police officers on Memorial Day.
It all happened shortly after 4 p.m. on the city's east side when officers were called to a home on Beaconsfield — near Morang and Cadieux — after getting reports of a young man who had been shot in the head.
When officers arrived, two women were on the porch screaming that someone had been shot, Detroit Police Chief James White said at a press briefing near the scene Monday evening.
Officers then went inside and encountered the alleged shooter — believed to be a man in his 30s — who was armed with a gun. White said the investigation is still in its early stages, but preliminary information was that the suspect pointed the gun at officers, who fired three shots.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials were not immediately sure how many times he was hit.
Authorities believe the man, whose name was not immediately released, was experiencing a mental health crisis. White said the suspect had been diagnosed with a mental health condition in the past, but no other details were revealed.
While the investigation was still ongoing, White said Monday evening it was believed the man's nephew was a teenager, but authorities were working to confirm details.
A woman who was giving CPR to the young victim was also taken to the hospital with an injury. Her condition was not disclosed and White said it was not immediately clear if she had been shot or injured in another manner.
