(WWJ) A man is dead after a confrontation with sheriff's deputies, Thursday afternoon in northern Macomb County.
According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies received information from the Chesterfield Township Police Department about a suspect who was wanted for felonious assault and fleeing and eluding.
Police warned that the suspect was armed, and believed to be experiencing a possible altered mental state.
Deputies first made contact with the suspect just after noon, near the intersection of 26 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, and tried to make a traffic stop.
Instead of following orders, sheriff's officials said the man threw his vehicle into reverse, slamming into a sheriff's patrol motorcycle. That's when one deputy fired a shot, and the suspect sped away westbound on 26 Mile Road, setting off a brief pursuit.
The sheriff's office said the suspect then abruptly stopped in the middle of the road, stepped out of his car holding a weapon, and ran directly toward the pursuing deputies.
A deputy opened fire, striking the man.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No injuries to officers were reported.
The investigation into the shooting has been handed over to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, following standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.
The man's name and other details are being withheld at this time, as the investigation continues.
The MCSO added, in a statement: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident."
