DETROIT (WWJ) — As President Joe Biden pays a visit to Metro Detroit on Thursday to celebrate his recent endorsement from the UAW, his approval rating is hitting generational lows, which is concerning for Democrats as his reelection campaign heats up.
On a new Daily J podcast WWJ's Zach Clark takes a look at the views surrounding Biden from both sides of the political aisle, which Dave Dulio, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Oakland University, calls "pretty sour."
Is there anything Biden can do to help himself find a way back his low approval ratings — which are the lowest of any president since Jimmy Carter, according to Dulio — or is it too late?
"He is gonna have to be front and center, he's gonna have to go talk to voters," Dulio said. "As you know, there are things that campaigns can do to mitigate protesters or folks that are opponents of the candidate, but he's gonna come here and see some folks who aren't real happy with him right now."
Biden's visit comes just days after UAW President Shawn Fain praised the president's ties to the working class, saying "the UAW knows where we stand, and who stands with us — Joe Biden," according to an Associated Press report.
Thursday's visit in Michigan, a critical battleground state for the upcoming Presidential Election with the highest density of Arab Americans in the nation, "threatens to be overshadowed by growing anger over U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza," according to the AP report.
Thursday's scheduled visit does not include any meetings with Arab Americans, according to the AP, which adds to "increasing frustration within a key voting bloc over his full-throated support of Israel in its war with Hamas."
Thursday's visit comes a little more than three weeks ahead of the state's Feb. 27 primary, in which Biden faces no serious challenge.
