(WWJ) As temperatures creep higher and are expected to hit the 90s this weekend, some thieves are stealing air conditioners in Harper Woods and other cities.

An advisory posted by the Harper Woods Police Department on Wednesday says the suspects are disconnecting the power to the units, cutting the refrigerant lines, then stealing the A/C condenser unit. "We believe the units are being sold on the street for profit," the advisory says.

Police say corner houses seem to be targeted more, likely due to accessability, and the thefts are happening late at night and in the early morning.

Detectives from several departments are investigating similarities in the crimes as they try to find those responsible.

Police are asking residents to monitor their neighborhoods for suspicious vehicles and people walking, especially after midnight.

One thing for homeowners to consider is to lock the junction box which contains the air conditioner's condenser fuse. This junction box is typically located on the side of the house near the unit.

If anyone has any suspect or suspect vehicle information, please call the Harper Woods Police Department at 313-343-2530 or Crime Stoppers at 800 SPEAK UP.
