'Calm situation': Authorities give the all clear after brief evacuation at 12 Oaks Mall in Novi

NOVI (WWJ) - A popular shopping mall in Oakland County was briefly evacuated early Saturday afternoon after a fire alarm going off initially caused some panic among shoppers.

Novi Police did not confirm if the mall was cleared of all shoppers and guests, but they did tell WWJ that a situation was going on regarding the fire alarm. Officers added that the Novi Fire Department was at the scene and cleared the mall to open.

Police mentioned it was a "calm situation" and no injuries were reported.

Several callers told WWJ that shoppers and guests at 12 Oaks Mall in Novi were gathered outside the food court area as the building was apparently evacuated shortly before 12:20 p.m.

Some callers said fire alarms were going off inside, but none of the witnesses claimed to have seen any flames.

At this time, it remains unclear why the fire alarm began going off.
