(WWJ) A man who barricaded himself inside a Southwest Detroit home for more than 12 hours has surrendered to police.
Detroit Police said the suspect, a man around 35 to 30 years old, fired about five shots from the upstairs unit of a duplex, on N. Green Street near Lexington and I-75, while a family with three small children was asleep in the downstairs unit, late Thursday night.
He then barricaded himself the attic, police said, then allegedly tried to set the house on fire.
Fortunately, were no injuries reported.
Franco Tostado, while lives on the bottom floor, said he was awakened by the gunfire.
WWJ's Charlie Langton asked him if he was afraid.
"Of course I was afraid!" Tostado said. "Me and my wife and my three kids were trying to go to sleep on the bottom floor, you know, and all of the sudden they wake you up with this alarm?"
"I mean, I know this is the west side, but come on. In your own house? Only in America!"
Tostado said he called the police, officers responded and his family got out of the house safely. They spent the night in a nearby parking lot.
So far, it's not clear what prompted the suspect to start shooting.
Langton reported police used flash bang grenades to try to get the man our of the house, were unsuccessful.
They set up a perimeter to keep people away from the home as they continue to attempt to communicate with the suspect.
The tense standoff continues well into Friday afternoon, finally ending when the man came out and after 2 p.m.
He turned himself in without further incident, and is now in custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
