DETROIT (WWJ) - Golf pro Ricky Fowler gave a very honest and human excuse for finishing with two bogeys at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit on Thursday -- he really had to use the bathroom.
WWJ sports reporter Chris Fillar said there were a few surprising sights, including a double eagle, also known as an albatross, from Dylan Wu who made a two on a par five.
"And speaking of making a two, Ricky Fowler had some interesting issues down the home stretch," Fillar added.
The 34-year-old Fowler was tied for the Rocket Mortgage Classic lead with his first round dwindling, but then things took a turn when he finished with back-to-back bogeys.
At a press conference afterward, Fowler revealed it wasn't his clubs, his swing or even an injury that slowed him down.
"To be perfectly honest, I had to go to the bathroom pretty badly, so luckily I just got drug tested so I went straight in. There weren't many bathrooms the last five holes so I was a little shaky coming in, and not to necessarily blame the finish on that, but it didn't help," explained Fowler.
The 34-year-old is expected to bounce back, after all, he started off his opening round with seven-under after 16 holes before the "bathroom emergency" hampered his play.
"Hopefully he solved all of those issues," Fillar said. "Maybe some fans had some Tums."
Twitter users were swift to swoop in on the bathroom humor shortly after Fowler's press conference hit the site.
"I see a Depends sponsorship in his future," one user posted.
"Bested by a dump," another person write. "Gotta respect that at least."
Another comment read: "Thank you, Rickie, for standing up for all of us that play courses with no dunk tanks on the back 9!"
Most of the responses, while humor-based, united with the golfer and praised him for his honesty.
"That is an hilarious take, especially having been in this situation on our yearly guys trip," a Twitter user commented.
"Turns a 10 handicap to 20. Golf is tough enough as is," another said.
Others comments that the Detroit Golf Club was, in fact, lacking toilets and made their own complaints about the situation.
Fowler appeared in the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club and missed the cut to go on and finish the season in 133rd on the FedEx standings.
The 34-year-old was reunited with coach Butch Harmon and has been on the upswing so far this year. Fowler made 7/19 cuts with seven top-10s and a tie for fifth at LA Country Club.
He currently holds the No. 16 spot on the Ryder Cup rankings.
