(WWJ) -- With the omicron variant leading the surge in COVID-19 cases, Beaumont Health said it's at a breaking point when it comes to patients and the virus.

In a statement released Thursday morning, the metro Detroit health care system said they have more than 750 COVID-19 patients across its eight hospitals -- a 40% increase just in the past week.

Of all the COVID patients in Beaumont hospitals, 62% are unvaccinated.

Additionally, more than 430 Beaumont workers are out with COVID or COVID-like symptoms.

A medical team from the U.S. Defense Department that was dispatched in December, which includes nurses and respiratory therapists, will continue to help at Beaumont's Dearborn hospital for an additional month -- despite previous plans to leave last week.

Due to the rise in cases, the health system is making some changes by reducing the number of elective surgeries and other tests.

Beaumont executives are urging people to get vaccinated, boosted and wear their masks.
