DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) The Archdiocese of Detroit is mourning a longtime and beloved priest.
They say Father Thomas Szura, 75, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 26. Fr. Szura, a priest of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill, served for 48 years, at both St. Sabina Parish in Dearborn Heights and Our Lady of Grace Parish in Warren.
According to a post from St. Sabina and the Detroit Catholic, he died when a vehicle struck him on the grounds of Corewell Hospital in Farmington Hills while he was visiting with and praying for the sick.
"Fr. Tom was a beloved friend and dedicated weekend associate of both Our Lady of Grace and Saint Sabina parishes for nearly 50 years," the parish said in a statement to the Detroit Catholic. "His decades of kindness, spiritual guidance, and warmth, especially his knack for ending Mass with a joke, leaves an unforgettable mark on our faith communities. We will miss his presence dearly."
Visitation will take place on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, from 3-7 p.m. at Stanley Turowski Funeral Home, 25509 W. Warren St., Dearborn Heights, with a Rosary at 7 p.m.
The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Sabina Church, 25555 Ann Arbor Trail, Dearborn Heights, on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. Mass will begin at 10 a.m., with Fr. Szura lying in state beginning at 9:30 a.m. Detroit Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger will preside over the mass.
"Father Tom was a man of God..." his obituary reads. "He was one of those who leaves his work in the hearts and souls of those who loved him."
