BERKLEY (WWJ) -- A new pet store in Berkley is under investigation following claims that the business has been selling animals without a license and possibly mistreating the cuddly critters.

The Berkley City Council, along with city police, are looking into reports of animal abuse and illegal animal sales at Puppygram, a pet shop located at Woodward and Franklin.

Complaints about the store first started rolling in last week, and on Monday, protestors set up outside.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reported from outside Puppygram Monday morning.

According to Langton, one of the main accusations against shop management is that they allegedly purchase their cats and dogs from disreputable breeders.

Puppygram workers deny all allegations of wrongdoing. One told Langton that the woman who runs the shop does a nice job.

Along with the investigation, the Berkley City Council plans to meet Monday at 7 p.m., to discuss a potential new ordinance to better regulate pet stores.

The proposed addition to the Berkley City Code would prohibit retail pet shops in the city from selling dogs or cats.
