(WWJ) -- It might be a good time to make sure your air conditioning is in proper working order!

A late May heat wave is taking over southeastern Michigan for the next several days, and the reason behind it is what’s called a “Bermuda High.”

The clockwise wind flow, which develops around Bermuda, means Michigan's air will being coming from the Atlantic, making it hotter and more humid.

MLIVE meteorologist Mark Torregrossa tells WWJ that the weather pattern typically occurs later in the summer, but this year, it’s arrived early!

“That’s a July/August-type pattern but it’s built into the southeast and it’s shoved the hot air all the way up to our region,” Torregrossa said.

Bermuda highs also tend to get stronger as the warmer months go on, so of this weekend is any indication, it’s going to be a hot summer in metro Detroit!

AccuWeather says temperatures will be in the high 80s around metro Detroit all weekend, with lows in the mid-to-high 60s.
