(WWJ) Former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos says she will not run for Michigan governor in 2022, putting an end to speculation about the onetime Trump administration Cabinet member.
Advisors for the 63-year-old Michigan-native said she "never" weighed a campaign to challenge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, despite weeks of chatter about a run.
“I am not running for governor,” DeVos told The Detroit News. “It's not going to be me. I appreciate that some folks are interested in that, but I think the rumor and interest really only serves to highlight how desperate Michiganders are for new leadership."
DeVos is married to billionaire Dick DeVos, a Republican who ran for governor in 2006, losing to then-incumbent, Democrat Jennifer Granholm.
It's unclear what the political future may hold for DeVos, who currently holds no office but on Twitter describes herself as, "Passionate about quality education for children and an advocate of school choice."
DeVos resigned her post as Education Secretary on Jan. 7 — blaming blamed then-President Donald Trump for inflaming tensions in the riots the day before at the U.S. Capitol. At that time she said in statement that, while her time with the government may be done, her time as an "advocate for students and families knows no limits."
