DETROIT (WWJ) – American manufacturing is roaring back.

That’s the message from President Joe Biden, who was in Detroit Wednesday at the North American International Auto Show.

In a speech at Huntington Place Wednesday afternoon, Biden touted the recent passage of government funding for auto technology and for electric vehicle charging stations, which he says will make “the great American road trip fully electrified.”

Biden said the U.S. led the world “by a significant margin” when it came to auto manufacturing and innovation, but “something went wrong along the way,” as the rest of the world began to catch up.

He says that’s changing now, as “we’re choosing to build a better America.”

That turning of the tide can be attributed to the EV revolution, which has seen companies like Ford, GM and others invest billions of dollars to make EVs, batteries and EV chargers. That includes right here in Michigan.

The three laws Biden attributed to helping that revolution include the $1.2 billion infrastructure law – which invests more than $7 billion to build a network of half a million EV chargers across the country – the Inflation Reduction Act that incentivizes Americans to buy EVS and the CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to boost semiconductor production in the U.S.

Biden also spent about an hour on the show floor and said he was “pleased” with the EVs he saw.
