DETROIT (WWJ) -- President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit General Motors' new Factory ZERO Wednesday afternoon to visit the all-electric plant and tout the recently passed infrastructure bill.
The former Detroit-Hamtramck Plant, which was completely gutted and renovated for the $2.2 billion project, is part of the company's plan to have an all-electric fleet of vehicles by 2035.
Biden's stop in Detroit is part of a road trip to promote the new package, which at $1.2 trillion is the largest investment in the country's infrastructure in decades.
Michigan is set to receive about $110 million over five years to support the expansion of the electric vehicle charging network. GM CEO Mary Barra, ringing Wall Street's opening bell Wednesday morning from the floor of Factory ZERO, said the market will be there for EVs.
"I think we're actually getting close to a tipping point where consumers now are much more willing to consider an all-electric vehicle because they see the benefit," Barra told NBC's "The Today Show."
WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert says GM is hoping to get some of the same love from Wall Street that investors have given to other EV startups like Rivian and Lucid.
Biden is expected to speak around 4:30 p.m. and many around the plant -- formerly the Detroit Hamtramck Plant -- are wondering whether he will take a ride in a new Hummer EV, like he got behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 Lightning during a visit to Ford earlier this year.
The WWJ Traffic Center is reminding drivers to be prepared for brief freeway and ramp closures Wednesday afternoon.
