DETROIT (WWJ) - It was a cloudy Thursday morning across the riverfront in downtown Detroit with the haziness sticking around into the early afternoon hours -- but it wasn't because of the weather.
Plumes of thick, grey smoke originating from a building fire in Windsor blew across the Detroit River and shrouded the Motor City as Canadian firefighters battled the early morning blaze.
According to the Windsor Fire Department, the fire broke out in a multi-unit building in the area of Tuscarora and Mercer.
Emergency crews were seen surrounding the building as they fought to subdue the flames. The Windsor Fire Department told WWJ that extra equipment was needed to dig through the building and put out hot spots.
Shortly before 12:30 p.m., officials confirmed they had put out the fire. They estimated half a million dollars worth of damage was done to the building as the flames raged for hours.
Streets in the area had been closed as crews worked the scene. At this time, there are no reported injuries.
