BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) — Police in Bloomfield Township have identified a man involved in a reported “stranger danger” incident near a school on Monday and determined no criminal activity occurred.
Two students at South Hills Middle School were approached by a man in a pickup truck around 3:45 p.m. in the area of Spruce Drive and Cathedral Drive, according to the Bloomfield Township Police Department.
They had just been dropped off at the bus stop when the man came up to them and asked if they wanted a ride, officials said. The students didn’t respond and went home immediately, according to police.
Tuesday morning police officials had requested the community’s help identifying the man in his 30s or 40s with a mustache, wearing a beret and driving a light-colored extended cab pickup.
Tuesday afternoon, officials said the man was soon identified and located. He was questioned and after a thorough investigation, authorities determined there is no indication that any criminal activity occurred.
“We would like to express our appreciation for the vigilance demonstrated by the students involved, who immediately reported the situation to a trusted adult, and to the community for providing information to quickly resolve the incident. We continue to work closely with the school district to ensure the safety of our students and community,” the police department said in a press release.
Officials said the department “remains committed to keeping our schools and
neighborhoods safe” and wants to “remind the community to stay aware of their surroundings, to trust their instincts, and to contact authorities if something feels suspicious. Thank you for your continued cooperation.”
