BLOOMFIELD TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – Police in Bloomfield Township say they sent their “bravest and best” officers to the report of an alligator or crocodile in a pond Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the department says officers were called to a home in the area of Franklin and Cedarholm Lane -- near the Forest Lake Country Club golf course -- around 4:40 p.m. after a woman reported seeing what she believed to be an alligator or crocodile.

The woman said she "didn't get close enough" to be able to tell the difference, the spokesperson said.

When officers arrived to the scene, there was "much hesitation," -- and probably rightfully so; it's not every day you see an alligator in metro Detroit.

Turns out, however, it was a fake reptile head floating in the water.

"All parties involved had a good laugh," the spokesperson said, noting it was taken back to the police department, where he said it will probably "be put to good use."

While it turned out to be a false alarm, it wouldn't have been the first time exotic animals were found in metro Detroit.

Earlier this year, African caracal cats got loose in Royal Oak and a man was once seen cruising down the street with a kangaroo in Detroit.
