BERLIN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A body washed up on the shores of Lake Erie in Monroe County, sheriff's officials said.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said authorities received a 911 call on Saturday, July 11, around 8:30 p.m. It came from a boater in the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area near the Banana Dikes, reporting an apparent body floating in the water near the northernmost dike.
The boater made the discovery approximately 15 feet from shore.
Divers from the Sheriff's Office Marine Division recovered the body from 3 to 4 feet of water. The Lucas County Coroner's Office will help identify the person and conduct an autopsy.
During the investigation, Monroe County authorities learned of a missing kayaker, 30-year-old Jesus "Chewy" Sanchez. Brownstown Township Police said he disappeared on the water when a severe storm moved through while he kayaked near Celeron Island on July 3.Investigators are working to determine if the body is that of Sanchez.
Berlin Township Fire Department, Brownstown Township Police, The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Monroe Community Ambulance all assisted at the scene.
