(WWJ) What was supposed to be a fun night, turned into tragedy on Detroit's westside Monday night. Detroit police say a child was hit by an ice cream truck and killed.
Police responded to the scene on Diversey Avenue and Rutland around 7 p.m. The child who was hit was under ten years old.
"It's a very tragic scene," Detroit Police 6th Precinct Captain Shannon Hampton said. "Our homicide, fatal squad is investigating the case right now, we made sure we brought plenty of resources, including our chaplain squad to make sure they are here to support the officers as well as the family, they're here to pray for their family as well."
Hampton said this time of year people should slow down and make sure to check their surroundings as they drive through neighborhoods because children are out playing and school buses and ice cream trucks are on the road.
The ice cream truck driver stopped at the scene and was taken into custody.
