NORTHVILLE (WWJ) - The Great Lakes Water Authority said crews have dewatered the break site off a 30-inch main transmission line in Northville that ruptured early Friday morning and now additional work to asses what is needed for repairs is underway.
The GLWA provided a Saturday update on work to address what city officials called a "massive" break in a 30-inch water transmission main on Baseline Road between Novi Street and Oakland Avenue in the city of Northville.
Residents were advised to use their water sparingly as the break is causing low water pressure in Northville and Northville Township.
The rupture occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, the GLWA said, with crews dispatched to the scene to isolate the break by closing to valves on the main, which is made of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe.
Crews working through the day on Friday to dewater the site so evaluations could be made. By Friday evening, the GLWA said their Field Service crews and their contracts were able remove most of the water from the break site using large pumps.
"On Saturday, crews will remove additional pavement around the site and place a trench box which will make it safe for them to inspect the pipe and
determine the materials required for the repair," the GLWA said in a press release.
On Friday morning, WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene where the main break sent water rushing up through concrete and turned the street into a raging wall of water which forced some residents out of their homes.
The running water even broke out a basement window in a nearby home and flooded the basement.
"They had a wedding this weekend and there was a wedding dress in the basement that they managed to save," Campbell said.
There is no timeframe on when repairs will be completed. There is no Boil Water Advisory issued for residents at this time.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
