The smell of fire and the look of panic are surrounding the Penobscot Building in Detroit Wednesday morning as three people were trapped in an elevator after a fire in the basement.
The people, initially reported to be stuck between the 28th and 29th floor, were trapped for about an hour before they were rescued by firefighters.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reported that those trapped included 87-year-old Nancy Norton and her daughter.
Norton told Langton it was quite an experience as they waited for help.
"It was scary because you could smell smoke in there and you were confined; you couldn't get out. And it just... it was terrifying," Norton said. "...You can't help but think that: 'Is this it?'"
"I'm so glad I wasn't alone," she added. "At least there were two other people with me."
No injuries were reported.
Officials believe some sort of electrical fire caused the incident, although there are no further details at this time.
Detroit fire crews remain on the scene at the Penobscot Building, a storied building that dates back to 1928, as the investigation continues.
