GENESEE COUNTY (WWJ) — A 27-year-old man is in custody after allegedly shooting his father — Timothy Kildee, the brother of Flint-area Congressman Dan Kildee — and crashing a stolen truck into another car early Tuesday morning.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said Tuesday afternoon there are three separate crime scenes spanning Genesee County: in the city of Burton, Vienna Township and Genesee Township.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday the Burton Police Department got a report of domestic violence at a home where the 27-year-old suspect had gotten into an argument with a family member and pulled out a gun. Authorities have not identified the family member.

Swanson said the suspect made contact with his birth mother, who picked him up and was taking him back to his father's home when he jumped out of her moving car.

The mother, got in contact with her ex-husband, Timothy Kildee, and decided they needed to go find him, Swanson said.

Another family member, who was sleeping in Kildee's basement, said when the father left to go find his son with the mother, he came back a short time later by himself.

The family member in the basement then heard a verbal confrontation that Swanson described as "a yelling match." The sheriff said "there was a comment made about 'give me your wallet and your keys' made by the suspect."

During the argument, one shot was fired, hitting and killing the 57-year-old Kildee. The suspect then allegedly stole his dad's truck and less than 10 minutes later crashed it into another truck.

Two people in the other truck sustained minor injuries, while the suspect is hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Swanson.

The sheriff said Kildee's wallet was found on the suspect after "this tale of violence."

While the suspect is in custody, he has not yet been charged. While the investigation is still active, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Tuesday he is expected to be charged with open murder, carjacking, armed robbery, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and likely a motor vehicle infraction related to the crash.

Authorities are awaiting the results of a toxicology report.

Swanson said he has been in contact with Congressman Kildee, who is flying back to Michigan from Washington, D.C.

The congressman released a statement Tuesday afternoon, saying his family is "grieving and heartbroken." The family is asking for privacy at this time.

Swanson said he will hold another briefing when charges are formally announced.
