DETROIT (WWJ) -- For the second year in a row, Detroit’s Campus Martius has been named among the best city squares in the country.
In the 2022 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards ranking for Best Public Square, Campus Martius Park was voted No. 4, thanks to its welcoming atmosphere, variety of activities, and beautiful city backdrop.
“Campus Martius Park serves as Detroit’s gathering place, where locals and visitors alike can come to take in the skyline views, people watch around the Woodward Fountain, grab a meal from a food truck or go ice skating in winter,” the 10Best website writes.
First opening in 2004, Campus Martius Park has helped transform the Motor City’s downtown area, and now hosts millions of people each year from Detroit and across the world.
Great restaurants, bustling businesses, and annual programming such as the Christmas tree lighting and ice skating rink, the Beach at Campus Martius, and the Detroit Jazz Festival are just few of the reasons to visit the city center.
Some of the other cities that appeared on the 10Best Top Public Squares list this year included Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, VT, Centerway Square in Corning, NY, Decatur Square in Decatur, GA and Healdsburg Plaza in Healdsburg, CA.
Campus Martius's recognition comes as a one-two punch for Detroit’s bragging rights, as America’s Thanksgiving Parade presented by Gardner White was also named the Best Holiday Parade in the U.S. in the same Readers’ Choice poll from USA Today this year.
