CANTON (WWJ) - Police say a young teen is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the face while home alone in Canton on Thursday afternoon.
The Canton Police Department said officers received a call about a 14-year-old male gunshot victim at an apartment complex near Warren and Lilley Roads around 1 p.m. on Oct. 19.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the young teen with an "accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face."
According to the department, the teen was apparently home alone when he got ahold of a gun and shot himself. The boy managed to get in touch with a neighbor who helped call 911.
The teen was rushed to a local hospital where he is currently being treated for his injuries.
Police are still investigating the incident, including how the boy managed to get ahold of the firearm and what led up to its discharge.
If warranted, the case will then be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review of possible charges.
“I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of responsible firearms ownership and storage,” said Police Chief Chad Baugh in a prepared statement. “Ensuring that firearms are securely stored in homes away from children or unauthorized users is essential in preventing tragedies such as this. The Canton Police Department has free gun locks available to the public, available at either the front desk or Records Bureau,.
