DETROIT (WWJ) — Repairs are ongoing at an apartment building on Detroit's far east side after a woman crashed her car into the building early Monday morning.
The crash happened at a small, two-story building in the area of Harper and Berkshire, near I-94, around 6 a.m. on Sept. 9.
The woman driving the car, who was the lone occupant of the black sedan, was taken into custody at the scene.
The woman who lives in the apartment, Angelique Smith, told WWJ's Jon Hewett she had just gotten home from work about 15 minutes before the crash.
"I was in the bathroom when the crash happened. I wasn't even in the house for 10-15 minutes. I heard a boom, like a big boom, I jumped up, went to the living room and it was a car in my living room," Smith said.
She then began yelling and ran outside, where she saw the other woman "stumbling" out of her car. Smith said the driver, who she said appeared to be intoxicated, changed her story about what exactly happened multiple times.
She also tried to walk away from the scene.
There's been no word yet from Detroit police on what caused the crash and no information about the driver has been released.
Hewett reported from the scene that crews with Landmark Property Management were working to structurally secure the building, which had some support beams knocked out. The building is uninhabitable until further notice.
No injuries were reported in the crash and Smith said she is thankful her dog, Casper, was not hit during the incident. She has started a GoFundMe page to help her find a new place to live and replace furniture and other items lost in the crash.
