DEARBORN (WWJ) -- Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced a partnership with Carhartt to grow their Dearborn campus and create over one hundred new jobs in Metro Detroit.

Kickstarted by a $937,500 grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund, this new project by the family-owned workwear and outdoor apparel manufacturer is expected to generate a total investment of $4.65 million and create 125 well-paying jobs.

According to the Governor's office, Carhartt chose the Dearborn campus for expansion over competing locations in other states.

“This investment by Carhartt... is great news for workers, their families, and our economy as we continue putting Michiganders first,” Governor Whitmer said.

Carhartt was founded in Detroit in 1889 and remains headquartered in Dearborn to this day. The company employs 5,500 people worldwide with over 600 jobs in Michigan.

Due to a recent increase in demand, Carhartt is upping their investment in a number of areas, including product design, digital marketing, customer care and operations.

To meet their goal, the company will be hiring web developers, marketing specialists, sales representatives and customer service personnel. These will be high-wage jobs, paying an average of $43.22 per hour plus benefits.

In addition to the grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund, Carhartt is also getting an assist from the city of Dearborn, which has offered to expedite the permit process.

“Dearborn is proud to serve as the home of multigenerational innovators like Carhartt," said Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, "and we welcome their continued belief in Dearborn as a catalyst for future impact.”
