LIVONIA (WWJ) - A stretch of I-96 in Wayne County reopened on Friday morning after troopers came up empty in their search to find shell casings in an alleged freeway shooting.

"After searching the freeway, the vehicles and interviews it was determined that this incident was only a road rage incident and there was no evidence of any shooting," Michigan State Police said of their investigation in an update given in the late morning hours.

Troopers and Livonia police officers were originally dispatched on the case due to a 911 call made around 4:25 a.m. The caller claimed he was driving on I-96 when the driver of a semi truck open fired at him possibly near Telegraph, in Redford.

WWJ's Charlie Langton was live at the scene earlier where police had pulled a big rig off the side of the road at 5 Mile and Middlebelt in Livonia.

"First of all, I can report that no injuries, but this is an investigation regarding a possible shooting that occurred on 96," Langton said.

Both drivers were interviewed by authorities.

"There's no damage that I can see," Langton said of the two vehicles. "The police are saying as well, no damage to either vehicle, and again, we want to emphasize no injuries."

Troopers closed the freeway near Outer Drive for several hours to search for shell casings and other evidence, but came up empty-handed.

MSP determined the incident was only a case of road rage with no shots fired.

"This investigation is closed," troopers stated in their update.
