CASEVILLE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A woman and her dog were saved after breaking through the ice in Caseville Township.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Department was called to a beach near Bay Drive on Sand Point around 12:45 p.m. on March 1, according to a written statement.

Caseville Township is at the tip of the Thumb, northwest of Bad Axe.

A woman was walking on the beach with her two dogs. The dogs chased a bird and ran out onto ice. One dog broke through the ice and into the water, the statement said.

The woman attempted to rescue the dog and broke through the ice as well.

She was able to get herself out of the water, which is around 4 feet deep, but was unable to get the dog out.

The Caseville Fire Department was able to get the dog out of the water after arriving on scene with ice rescue gear.

The woman refused treatment from paramedics on scene, according to the statement.

Authorities are reminding the public to treat all ice as unsafe, especially with unusually high temperatures recently.
