ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- A metro Detroit man accused of murdering his mother on Thanksgiving is expected to face a judge on Monday.
The 22-year-old man from Troy was arrested late Thursday night after allegedly shooting and killing his 52-year-old mother as she was driving on Woodward Avenue underneath the I-696 overpass.
Royal Oak Police said they responded around 10:30 p.m. to multiple 911 calls about a crash near the Detroit Zoo.
On the scene, officers found the Southfield woman dead in her car with a gunshot wound to the head.
Pleasant Ridge Police Sgt. Robert Reid told WWJ that officers immediately attempted life-saving measures on the woman, "And while they were doing that they heard gunshots north of where they were at."
Police say the suspect had gotten out of the car following the shooting, walked northbound on Woodward and began shooting at passing vehicles.
A 43-year-old Ferndale woman who was driving one of the cars was shot in the thigh. She was then taken to Beaumont Hospital where she is currently recovering.
Two other cars were also hit during the incident, though no other injuries were reported.
A short time later, the alleged shooter was arrested and taken to Oakland County Jail. A 9mm handgun was also recovered at the scene.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department will present the case to the Prosecutor’s Office on Monday morning.
No motive for the shooting has been released at this time.
