YPSILANTI (WWJ) -- One person is dead after he was shot by a Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputy after a chase and crash overnight.
According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, just before 2 a.m. Tuesday, deputies attempted to pull over a van with no license plates or headlights that was spotted in the area of Michigan Ave. and Prospect Rd. in Ypsilanti.
The driver fled from deputies, who then began chasing the van.
At one point, the sheriff's office said driver of the van went down the wrong way of Grove Rd. and tried ramming into multiple police vehicles.
The van eventually got into a crash with a deputy's vehicle near Prospect and Towner.
Dispatch got calls of shots fired, advising that the suspect was armed with a shotgun, officials said.
It's not yet clear whether there was a shootout, and details about the suspect — who was dead on the scene — have not been released.
No officers were injured.
Michigan State Police are now investigating the incident.
The sheriff's office said, in a statement: "Any loss of life and any officer involved shooting is a tragedy. To respect the privacy of the individual involved and their family, information regarding the identity of the person cannot be released. We ask the public’s understanding in accordance with best practices, this investigation has been turned over to and is being led by the Michigan State Police so no additional details can be shared at this time."
