MACKINAC ISLAND (WWJ) -- One of the keynote speakers Thursday at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island was former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who continued her now long-running verbal assault on former President Donald Trump.
"At one point when Donald Trump called me a RINO (Republican in name only)... I came up with what I thought was a great tweet, which was that I've been a Conservative longer than Donald Trump has been spray tanning," Cheney said, drawing laughter from a packed, bi-partisan crowd at the Grand Hotel.
Would Cheney ever consider a run for the White House?
"I am not making any announcements today, and I am really focused on making sure that Donald Trump isn't anywhere close to the Oval Office again," she said, to applause from the audience.
"And I'm gonna continue to do everything I can, both to ensure that, also to make sure that other election deniers are not elected...and I just think that that is just so hugely important," Cheney added. "You know, when we put people in positions of authority who deny the sanctity of our elections, we really do put the republic at risk. So, in offices around the country I am going to be working in that regard."
The former Republican Congresswoman asserted that the number of members of Congress who truly believe that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump is in fact very small.
"Now, I think with the others...they'll say, 'You know, look. I'm not claiming the election was stolen, but I'm gonna support Donald Trump if he runs again.' They'll say that," she said. "And I think there the question has to be, you know, how in the world can you contemplate giving someone the awesome power of the presidency when he has demonstrated that he's willing to be completely unfaithful to the Constitution."
Cheney, who served as a vice chair of the January 6th Committee, said she has no regrets going after the insurrectionists — despite losing her seat in Congress and the support of hard right conservatives as a result.
Cheney noted that the January 6th Committee recommended criminal charges against Trump for his role in that day's events.
"I mean, he certainly shouldn't be anywhere near engaged in our politics or political life again," Cheney said. "But if he's not held accountable for what he did, then what he did becomes acceptable. And we will see it again, and again and again."
As for who she might support for POTUS in 2024, Cheney would not say. She did, however, disclose that she will not back Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in his bid, after DeSantis said recently he would consider pardoning some of those involved in the violent riots at the Capitol should with the presidency.
