CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- Multiple felony charges have been filed against a Chesterfield Township man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase with two young children in the vehicle.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, the chase began at around 9 a.m. Thursday when a deputy tried to pull over the 29-year-old suspect, who was allegedly driving a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee in Clinton Township.

The sheriff's office said suspect fled, driving east on E. Price Drive and continuing onto King Drive, where he ran a red light, and then turned south on Harper.

Sheriff's officials said the suspect was driving recklessly, speeding, and at times driving in the left turn lane and into oncoming traffic.

Deputies chased the man onto I-94, where they tried to box him in. It didn't work, and the suspect did a U-turn and started driving the wrong way on the freeway. "The suspect unpredictably crisscrossed three lanes
of oncoming traffic multiple times, disregarding the safety of every individual on the crowded freeway," according to a release by the MCSO.

The man was eventually stopped on I-94 near Shook Rd. in Harrison Township, where he was taken into custody.

The sheriff's office said deputies thought the driver was alone in the car, but they found a 3-year-old and an infant in the backseat.

The children were checked out at a hospital and cleared before being released into the care of a family member.

One deputy suffered a minor injury, official said, and no other injuries were reported. Three MCSO patrol vehicles were damaged.

The suspect was booked in the Macomb County Jail where he was scheduled to be arraigned in 41B District Court later Friday on charges of fleeing and eluding, receiving and concealing stolen motor vehicle, and two counts of second degree child abuse.
