DETROIT (WWJ) -- Chevy is planning a big holiday celebration on the Detroit riverfront tonight, including a show featuring 1,000 drones.
“We said ‘Let’s do a series of events in real life, where we can bring community together in a festive spirit and share a lot of Chevy’s values,” said Chevrolet Brand and Product Director Chad Lyons.
The Detroit event–called Holiday Magic– will be Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 PM at Cullen Plaza in Riverwalk Park, along the Detroit River in downtown Detroit. The event is free, but you do need to register at this link.
It’s an outgrowth of the holiday commercials that Chevrolet does every year, what the brand calls its “Holiday Card to America.” Lyons says this year they decided to include it as part of a nationwide tour to to show the capabilities of the Chevy Silverado EV, including the ability to take the electric truck on a long road trip.
“What we did is, we started in San Diego, and we went to Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta and–finally–Detroit. We’ve been doing events with local carolers, hot chocolate, roasting smores. Completely free. Open to the public.”
Chevrolet has also partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program and is encouraging people who come to bring a toy to contribute.
Holiday Magic has been well attended in other cities, with expectations of the same as Chevy returns home.
“People have told us thank you,” said Lyons. “This shows that Chevy Cares.”
The power to the event will be provided by the electric Silverados. That includes charging 1,000 drones that will put on a show at the Detroit Riverfront.
“It lasts about 15 minutes,” says Lyons. “It talks about what are the different traditions that people have, culminating with the beautiful spectacle of a Christmas tree, with a Chevy bow-tie on the top.”
