DETROIT (WWJ) -- Just a couple of days after the slap heard 'round the world, comedian Chris Rock has announced he is adding a second performance in Detroit to his "Ego Death World Tour 2022."
The reason for the additional date, according to a news release, is "overwhelming demand."
The second performance at the Fox Theatre will be Saturday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. Produced by Live Nation, the North American leg of Rock’s first world tour in over five years was already set to visit the Fox on Friday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m.
Tickets, starting at $49.50, for the newly announced Sept. 17 date go on sale Friday, April 1 at 10 a.m. at 313Presents.com, LiveNation.com, Ticketmaster.com and the XFINITY Box Office at Little Caesars Arena. A limited number of tickets were still available for the September 16 show, as of Wednesday.
"Lauded by peers and critics alike, Chris Rock is one of our generation’s strongest comedic voices, promoters wrote. "With a career spanning more than three decades, Rock has enjoyed ongoing success in both film and television as a comedian, actor, writer, producer and director."
Not mentioned in the news release: the incident Sunday night that so many people are still talking about.
During the Oscars broadcast on live TV, actor Will Smith stormed stage and “smacked the s*** out of” Rock, as the comedian put it, after he had made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, poking fun at her bald head.
Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia, which causes hair loss.
Those considering buying tickets to either of Rock's Detroit shows should take note: The event will be a phone-free experience. Use of phones will not be permitted in the performance space, and anyone seen using a device during the performance will be escorted out of the venue by security, promoters said.
Upon arrival at the venue, phones will be secured in individual Yondr pouches that will be opened at the end of the event. Guests maintain possession of their devices at all times, and can access them throughout the event only in designated Phone Use Areas within the venue. All devices will be re-secured in Yondr pouches before returning to the performance space.
