MILFORD (WWJ) – The city of Dearborn has reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed after the death of a 10-year-old boy at Camp Dearborn last summer.
Carson died in July 2022 after falling from a floating play structure at Camp Dearborn, which is located in Milford but owned by the city of Dearborn.
Dunn was playing on the “Jungle Float” on Phillip Lake on July 6, 2022, when he slipped and tried to catch his fall, according to the lawsuit, which was filed back in April. The child reached for the handles on the structure, but the lawsuit claimed they were defective or not properly secured.
He fell off the upper level and hit a railing or platform before falling into the water. He suffered severe blunt force trauma to his chest. The lawsuit claims he did not receive potentially life-saving care, which stemmed from a lack of proper staffing at Camp Dearborn.
The city settled the lawsuit in late September, according to a report from WDIV. The amount of the settlement was not disclosed.
Representing the victim’s family, Dunn’s injury was similar to that of one in a high-speed car crash.
A scholarship for recreational basketball players in Metro Detroit has been set up in Dunn’s honor.
