CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- One person is dead and another has been taken to a hospital from the scene of a fire at a condominium complex in Clinton Township.
According to officials with the Clinton Township Fire Department, a call came in from a neighbor at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, reporting smoke coming from a home.
Firefighters arrived quickly to the scene, on Suttons Bay Dr. off Gratiot near Hall Road, within six minutes.
They entered an attached condo unit and found one person, who was conscious.
One firefighters got that person out the door while another extinguished the fire. The person was taken by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.
While that was happening, firefighters found a second victim and got them out. Unfortunately, the fire department said that second person was pronounced dead.
The Clinton Township Fire Department Inspection division is now working to determine what caused the fire.
No further information about the victims was released.
“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” said Clinton Township Supervisor Paul Gieleghem, in a statement. “We are keeping everyone impacted by this incident in our thoughts, particularly the individual who is receiving care. We are grateful to our first responders who acted quickly to respond to this incident.”
With this incident in mind. Clinton Township Fire Chief John Gallagher strongly emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors in the home, as they provide an early warning that can give residents critical time to safely escape a fire.
He also encouraged residents to regularly test their smoke detectors, replace batteries as needed and ensure there is a working detector on every level of the home and near sleeping areas.
