CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- What was supposed to be a night of fun for some high schoolers in Macomb County turned into disappointment, due to a reported threat.

The Clintondale High School senior prom was canceled Tuesday night, after school officials received information that a student was planning to bring a gun to the event.

Interim Superintendent Kevin Knoblock and Principal Dr. Daniel Berry announced the cancellation, saying the decision wasn't easy, but was made with law enforcement to make sure all students were safe.

Students were informed just about an hour before the scheduled prom, and about an hour after the tip came in through the Michigan Stare Police OK2SAY hotline.

Clintondale School Board President Jared Maynard said, while he knows the kids are disappointed, canceling the event was the right thing to do.

"People are incredibly upset, and I feel for them because all the nice clothing, all of the expenses that go into going to prom," Maynard told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "But this is this issue: As a school board member, Charlie, safety has to come first."

Over 100 students paid $80 a ticket for the event, that was supposed to take place at the Blossom Heath Inn in St. Clair Shores.

The district has not made a decision yet whether the Clintondale prom will be rescheduled.

There's been no word on a possible suspect, as the investigation continues.
