(WWJ) It was a brief, but record-setting heatwave in Metro Detroit.

It certainly did not feel much like winter the morning of Jan. 9, 2026, when we broke the official heat record with a recorded temperature of 58 degrees at Detroit Metro Airport. The previous record was set way back in 1880, according to AccuWeather, at 55 degrees.

WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg warned, however, the the warmth would not be sticking around.

There's a front moving across the state bringing high winds and some cooler weather with it. Friday morning, Lundberg said Grand Rapids set a record high of 59 degrees, but was already down to 44 degrees by 9 a.m.

"Winds are gusting (in Grand Rapids) to 50 miles an hour. It won't be quite that strong here, but we'll see gusts over 40 miles an hour during the midday and early afternoon hours, and that will set temperatures plunging into the low 40s," Lundberg said.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory, in effect for Metro Detroit and the entire Lower Peninsula until 4 p.m. Friday.

By late afternoon, DTE Energy was reporting around 15,000 power outages at home and businesses in Metro Detroit. [CHECK THE DTE OUTAGE MAP].

Lundberg said the winds would die off fairly quickly into Friday evening, as temperatures drop back to more what you'd expect this time of year: around 31 degrees.

Saturday will be colder, with a little rain the afternoon.

"But it's not gonna stay rain for very very long," Lundberg said. "I think it'll mix with snow and then end in some snow tomorrow evening. There could be a quick coating to an inch in places."

The high on Saturday will reach the uppers 30s before, then dipping down overnight ahead of a blustery and cold Sunday.

AccuWeather says we'll see clouds on Sunday in Metro Detroit, a couple of passing snow showers, and a high of 33 degrees.
