DETROIT (WWJ) -- The longtime home of the Detroit Tigers will have a new name come next season.
Comerica Park is becoming Fifth Third Park, the club announced Monday, on the heels of a $12.3 billion merger in February by which Fifth Third Bank acquired Comerica Bank.
"Today's announcement ends a 26 year run for the Comerica name at the corner of Woodward and Montcalm," WWJ's Tim Pamplin reported. "It's no big surprise, but Fifth Third signs have been popping up all around the ballpark here recently, and today the Tigers and 5th Third Bank made the name change officially. Nothing too dramatic, just changing America to Fifth Third."
Fifth Third's president Tim Spence, said nothing will change until 2027.
"One of the things that we committed to both the Ilich family and the Tigers in the city of Detroit is we weren't going to be making any name changes before the end of the season this year," he said, at Monday's news conference. "So you really won't see anything change until we're much closer to Opening Day next year."
The Tigers' Triple-A affiliate, the Mud Hens, play at a similarly-named venue in Toledo called Fifth Third Field. There used to be another Fifth Third Field located in Dayton, Ohio, but it has since been renamed Day Air Ballpark.
The Tigers' High-A affiliate West Michigan Whitecaps used to play at Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids, but that venue has been named LMCU Ballpark since 2021.
