Consumers Energy worker has been on the job in metro Detroit for 56 years

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- One inspiring metro Detroit woman has been lighting up Consumers Energy with her hard work and dedication for over five decades.

Eva Fullwood has been working with the utility for 56 years, making her the woman with the longest work record in the company’s 135-year history.

The 77-year-old employee -- who works at the Consumers Energy Royal Oak Service Center -- first joined the company in 1964, and has held a variety of positions.

Fullwood began the first decade of her career at Consumers working in accounting and meter reading, but has spent the past 40+ years as a gas dispatcher -- including 30 years working midnight shift.

As an essential employee, Fullwood also continued performing her duties at the service center throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A dispatcher position is a stressful job that requires the ability to multi-task, remain calm in the face of emergencies like gas pipeline break, and to communicate well with employees,” Consumers said. “Eva is all this and more. She also routinely volunteers to work double-shifts when co-workers are ill or on vacation.”

Fullwood, who also has two sons, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, says she was inspired by her mother’s work ethic, as she stayed active in the workforce until she was 75.

Despite the fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment that comes along with her job, Fullwood tells WWJ’s Jason Scott that she has no plans to retire anytime soon.

“I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago, and he said ‘Are you thinking about retiring?’ I said, ‘Hmm…maybe two years from now.’ And I’ve been saying ‘two years’ for I don’t know how long,” she said.
