LIVONIA (WWJ) -- One person was taken to a hospital after he was shot during a confrontation with police officers, Friday afternoon in Livonia.
Officers remained on the scene as of 4 p.m. on June 6, at a shopping plaza on Middlebelt Rd., which was closed as a result of the police activity.
According to Livonia Police Chief Tom Goralski, officers responded to the Contact Front Airsoft & Paintball store next door to a cell phone store on Middlebelt, near Five Mile, at 2:10 p.m. on a report about a man with a gun who was acting strangely.
Goralski said preliminary information is that officers arrived and approached the man, who then allegedly pointed a gun at an officer.
An officer then shot the man, identified a 31-year-old Livonia resident.
Goralski said the man may have been having a mental health episode, but the investigation is ongoing.
The man's condition is unknown at this time. No officers were hurt.
An alert sent to residents in the area asked that the public avoid Middlebelt between Five Mile and Lyndon, with that half-mile stretch of road closed until further notice.
