
SUMPTER TWP. (WWJ) -- Police in western Wayne County used a drone to find a man hiding in the woods, after he allegedly killed one woman and injured another in a hit-and run.
According to police, the deadly crash happened at around 8 p.m. Sunday in Sumpter Township, which is south of Belleville.
Sumpter Township Police said a driver, identified as a 43-year-old Detroit man, lost control of his car and ran off the road in the area of 26000 Sumpter Rd.
He ran over one woman and hit another woman who were on foot, before crashing into a tree, police said.
The jumped out of the vehicle and ran a wooded area after the crash, and police began searching for him.
The 49-year-old Rockford, Illinois woman who was pinned under the vehicle died, police said, and the 39-year-old Plainfield, New Jersey woman who was hit was-severely injured.
Investigators said all three people involved were leaving a large party at a house in the area.
Three hours after the crash, police used a drone to track and locate the man hiding in the woods. He was arrested and now awaits charges by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
The suspect's name is being withheld, pending an arraignment.
Along with Sumpter Township officers, the Huron Township Police, Van Buren Township Police, Monroe County Sheriff's Department Patrol and Drone Units, Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction and K-9 units, Michigan DNR, Monroe City Police, and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol all assisted with this case.
