UPPER PENINSULA (WWJ) -- Have you ever considered leaving your current life to live one that's more off-the-grid?
A Ferndale couple did just that and now they find themselves -- along with their two-year-old son and fluffy companion -- living in the U.P. wilderness.
Brandon and Fiona Garlow's inspiration to move into a more natural lifestlye began when the two of them ran 227 miles across northern Michigan, the U.P. and Minnesota to raise money for the legal defense of indigenous people.
The money would go towards those who were arrested for protesting the Line 3 pipeline that runs through untouched wetlands and the treaty territory of Anishinaabe peoples.
As a result, Brandon -- who is a Mohawk Native American -- said they wanted to live in nature and to explore life in a way they never had before.
The two of them then sold their house, gave up their careers as realtors and moved into a tent in the U.P. with their son.
As for dealing the northern Michigan winters, Brandon said they have a "four-seasons" tent and a wood stove to keep them warm.
Brandon and Fiona are raising money for the indigenous people with a GoFundMe "Running Into A New Earth."
