DETROIT (WWJ) — Police are investigating after a multi-vehicle crash Monday morning led to a police chase on Detroit’s east side.

The crash, involving four or five cars, happened around 7 a.m. on May 19 along the westbound I-94 Service Drive near Moross. Detroit police and St. Clair Shores police were both investigating at the scene.

Initial reports indicate that St. Clair Shores police may have been pursuing a suspect at the time of the crash. WWJ’s Charlie Langton reports the suspect may have been wanted for armed robbery in St. Clair Shores.

Charlie Moore, who lives near the scene, told Langton he was taking his daughter to school Monday morning when he heard the crash, which “sounded like a freight train.” He and his daughter then went to the scene and saw at least one suspect running away, he said.

“Whoever it was, I’m surprised he got out and ran. That’s how bad the accident was. I thought whoever was in that car was dead,” he said

While the scene has been cleared, Detroit and St. Clair Shores police are continuing to investigate.

It was not clear whether anyone was injured in the crash.
