DETROIT (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after a crash led to gunfire on the Southfield Freeway in Detroit Monday afternoon.
Michigan State Police closed the northbound lanes of M-39 at McNichols Road shortly before 3 p.m. for a crash investigation, causing major backups in the area.
As troopers were investigating, family members of one of the drivers involved in the crash showed up on-scene to help, MSP officials said.
While they were there, a third party drove past the scene of the crash and fired shots. Nobody was hit by the gunfire, officials said.
MSP officials said "this was not a random incident nor a road rage incident," but did not release any details on what exactly led to the shooting.
Authorities found the suspect's vehicle, but no one is in custody, officials said.
It was not immediately clear what led to the initial crash or if anyone was injured as a result.
The freeway was closed for several hours during the afternoon rush hour as detectives collected evidence and conducted the investigation. It remained closed as of 6 p.m.
